Causes of Women’s Infertility

Causes of Women’s Infertility

The most common cause of female infertility is an ovulation disorder of some type, which may include infrequent or completely absent ovulation. Factors that may cause ovulation disorders include:

  • Polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOS) – according to the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association (PCOSupport), PCOS affects between five and ten percent of all women. A hormone disorder, it is believed to have ties to the body’s ability to recognize the hormone insulin. Visit our PCOS page for more information and treatment options regarding this disorder.
  • Hypothalamus dysfunction – since the hypothalamus helps control the pituitary gland, and the pituitary gland controls the ovaries, problems with the hypothalamus can have a devastating affect on a woman’s ability to conceive. There are a number of causes of hypothalamus dysfunction, including everything from genetic disorders to head trauma.
  • Hyperprolactinemia – overproduction of the prolactin hormone, which can cause irregular periods. In turn, this can cause female infertility problems.
  • Ovarian failure – premature or normal aging of the ovaries which significantly reduces the number of eggs available to be fertilized in any given month.

Other causes of female infertility include blocked fallopian tubes, birth defects affecting the reproductive organs or uterine fibroids.
