Infertility: More Common Than You May Think

If you are a man or woman who's been diagnosed with infertility, you're probably feeling a combination of anger, frustration, grief, fear or shame. Please know first that you are not alone. One in seven couples in the United States experiences infertility, making it more common than breast cancer, but it's a silent epidemic that many people go through alone, without telling even their families.

Not only are you not alone, but help is out there, and in many cases the treatment can be relatively simple. A diagnosis of infertility doesn't automatically mean you'll be forced to have in vitro fertilization to conceive a child. There are a number of diagnostic treatments and surgeries that can correct problems and allow you to conceive on your own. Once you've found a doctor you trust and can connect with emotionally to help you through this process, the first item on the doctor's agenda should be to find a diagnosis for your infertility. Usually when a couple experiences infertility, problems with female fertility are found about one-third of the time, male factor infertility is the cause in about one-third of cases, and the rest are categorized as "unexplained." Whatever your diagnosis, learn as much as you can about the issues you face and ask as many questions as you need to of your doctor - he or she is there to help you and work with you to achieve your dream of having a baby.
